Business visit highlights value of training during times of recession

Neil Carmichael and Phillip Hammond MP visit local firm where training is a cornerstone of their strategy to cope with the recession
Neil Carmichael, Parliamentary Candidate for Stroud, and Phillip Hammond MP, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, visited Pearce Platford Electrical Engineering as part of a mission to find out how businesses are coping with the challenges of the economic slowdown.
Neil Carmichael commented, “Pearce Platford is obviously determined to succeed and one key element of the company’s strategy is effective training of all staff. The commitment to training is impressive and the results from it prove its worth.
“I am a governor of Stroud College so it was particularly pleasing to hear glowing reports of the training provision and support that the college has been providing to Pearce Platford. I have been very keen to promote this kind of collaboration and it is obviously working here.”
Phillip Hammond MP was also impressed with the company’s approach to training. He noted that such a strategy would help to sustain the business during the difficult months ahead.
Terry Bray, a director of Pearce Platford commented, “We have built up a close relationship with Stroud College and regularly let prospective trainees join us for two weeks of work experience. We have found that employing apprentices and training them into electricians is the best form of recruitment in an industry short of skilled tradesmen”.
