Sir
In response to David Drew’s letter about party funding and the financial position of candidates, I can confirm that the bulk of funding for my campaigning activities is raised locally. This has been the case for a long time.
Indeed, this is a good opportunity to thank all those who have contributed so generously to our funds. I attend a large number of fundraising activities and I am always grateful to my supporters for all that they do to raise funds.
Like all opposition campaigns across the political spectrum, we have received some financial support from our Central Office. This goes some way to redressing the balance of the £10,400 of taxpayers’ money available to the current MP to spend each year on his campaign material through the Communications Allowance - which a Conservative Government has pledged to scrap.
It is interesting to note that the Labour MP fails to mention that Labour has received more than £10.5 million in donations from “non-doms”, including from Lord Paul, who was made a Privy Counsellor following his donations of £69,250 to Gordon Brown and Labour.
As for the interest in my own financial affairs, I am more than happy to complete the Ministry of Justice’s “Declaration of Interests”. This will expose the fact that I, like many others, have been badly affected by recession.
Yours faithfully
Neil Carmichael
Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Stroud
