Madam
In response to Steve Parker’s letter on the European Union (SNJ 30 December 2009), I can reassure him that I am quite happy to talk about Europe.
His concerns over the Common Agricultural Policy, referendums and the powers of the European Parliament are precisely the reasons why we need a Conservative Government.
Unlike the current Labour Government’s position, we will insist that a referendum is held should any future treaty mean that further powers would handed over from Britain to Brussels.
Conservatives would also seek to protect our Criminal Justice system against further EU encroachment and we would restore national control over social and employment legislation.
These and other measures will enable Britain to start shaping a less intrusive European Union in contrast to the Labour Government’s inability to properly represent our national interest.
Yours faithfully
Neil Carmichael
Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Stroud
