Neil Carmichael’s petition underpins campaign for Swindon to Kemble double tracking

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 Neil Carmichael’s petition underpins campaign for Swindon to Kemble double tracking

Neil Carmichael, Parliamentary Candidate for Stroud, is supporting the County Council’s campaign to ensure that the Swindon to Kemble rail track is doubled up. Neil, like many commuters, is keen to see the line upgraded because it would reduce travel time and, crucially, long delays.

As part of the campaign, Neil has started a petition to gather support for a submission to the Transport and Infrastructure Board in time for its decision on 12 November.

Neil Carmichael commented, “Earlier this year, £20 million was earmarked towards the project, which while welcome, was significantly short of the current estimated cost of £50m. However due to the failure of the Westbury By-pass, an additional £30m has now become available. I believe the case for the doubling of the Swindon and Kemble line is powerful.”

Neil added, “Gloucestershire businesses would benefit enormously from improved links with London. Our aims must include fewer journeys by road, more businesses based in the local community and improved connections with customers. Double tracking the Swindon to Kemble line will make the difference.”
