Sir John Major comes to Stroud

Former Prime Minister is guest speaker for dinner for 230 people at Forest Green Rovers

The Rt Hon Sir John Major, KG, CH, Prime Minister from 1990 to 1997, was special guest speaker for a packed fundraising dinner held at Forest Green Rovers Football ground, Nailsworth.

230 people enjoyed his powerful speech on the state of the British economy, Labour’s ruination of the strong financial position they inherited in 1997 and the immense challenges facing the next government.

Sir John underlined his theme by noting that many individuals now faced uncertainty over their employment, pension or home. He also pointed out that the public debt was now four times higher than when the last Labour Government needed emergency support from the International Monetary Fund in 1976.

Neil Carmichael, Parliamentary Candidate, and who invited Sir John to Stroud, said, “Sir John Major has reminded us all of the importance of decency and trust in public life. He has also shown that Conservatives can restore the nation to financial stability under the leadership of David Cameron.”

Neil added, “I am immensely grateful to Sir John for coming to Stroud in support of my campaigns.”
